What to wear for outdoor family photos near Seattle + Everett

If you’re spiraling about outfits for your outdoor family portrait session near Seattle or Everett, take a breath. Your family is the main attraction. The clothes are just vibes. However, I know that’s not helpful so here are my guidelines for what to choose for your photo portrait session.

Rule #1: clothes are meant to fit you, not the other way around.

If something pinches, rides up, or makes you feel like trash, we’re not wearing it. Plus size bodies deserve comfort and cuteness at the same damn time.

Keep it simple: solid colors photograph best outdoors, especially in the PNW where the background is already doing a lot (trees, water, mountains, dramatic clouds, etc.). Skip super busy prints unless they’re truly your personality. Avoid stark white or stark black unless that’s your signature.

Choose comfort you can move in. Kids will run. Adults will crouch. Someone will pick up a toddler. Layers are great in Seattle weather and they add texture: jackets, sweaters, overalls, dresses, skirts, or big cozy scarves.

If you’re a queer or polyam family and you’re worried about “matching,” please don’t! Coordinated is better than identical. We’ll photograph the combinations that matter to you: parents with kids, the whole crew, chosen family, etc.
