Weather Considerations for Outdoor Boudoir Sessions in Seattle
We both love and hate our sweet Seattle’s weather here. Because I specialize in portraiture outdoors, I've learned how to work with the Pacific Northwest's ever-changing weather patterns. Here are some weather considerations I use during my outdoor boudoir sessions.
Understanding Seattle's Seasons
The PNW can be a bit unpredictable, but here are the general seasons and how they relate to my outdoor boudoir sessions.
Summer (June-September): My busy season with the most reliable sunny or warm (for us) weather. Temperatures typically range from 65-80°F with minimal rainfall and beautiful golden hours. Here, I like early mornings for folks who are willing because the soft light is to die for, plus it offers the most likelihood of privacy possible.
Fall (October-November): A beautiful but often unpredictable time. The changing foliage creates stunning backdrops and gorgeous lighting, but prepare for cooler temperatures (50-65°F) and increased chance of rain. Folks who want the fall vibes have to either be comfortable with flexibility of date or some potential rain. But who doesn’t love a wet look?! It can be so perfect for the right person.
Winter (December-February): The. Best. Light. All. Year. While we go to places that have great lighting anytime of the year, winter is prime time for soft and even light for outdoor boudoir. It does mean, however, that the changes of being rained on is much higher. Temperatures drop to 40-50°F with frequent rain. We always have the option of indoor-outdoor spaces like greenhouses or covered gardens.
Spring (March-May): A season of renewal with blooming flowers and greenery. Temperatures warm to 50-65°F, but rain remains common. We will plan for wind protection and have warming accessories readily available.
Essential Planning Tips
When scheduling your outdoor boudoir session in Seattle, consider these practical tips:
Location scouting: I choose locations with natural wind barriers and both sunny and shaded areas. Private beaches, secluded forest clearings, and botanical gardens with covered areas work beautifully.
Timing is everything: Early morning sessions (6-9am in summer) often have the most stable conditions before afternoon clouds build. But I am a night owl so I love an afternoon session. Depending on the time of year, this will impact which locations I recommend.
Comfort accessories: Incorporate stylish wraps, robes, and blankets that complement your look while providing warmth.
Embracing Seattle's Unique Light
Seattle's famous overcast days are actually perfection for outdoor boudoir photography. In fact, cloud cover creates a natural diffuser, eliminating harsh shadows or the dreadful “raccoon eyes.” The region's famous "Seattle glow" – that soft, pearly light that happens when the sun filters through high clouds – creates an ethereal quality perfect for intimate portraits.
Contingency Planning
Always have a backup plan for your session:
I always discuss with my clients a weather back up in case there is rain, dangerous air quality due to smoke, ice, or other unsafe weather.
Clear umbrellas can create stunning visual elements while keeping you dry.
Final Thoughts
Seattle's weather may be unpredictable, but with proper planning, it offers incredible opportunities for unique and atmospheric outdoor boudoir photography. The key is flexibility, preparation, and working with a photographer who understands how to harness the region's distinctive light and seasonal beauty.
Remember that your comfort is essential for capturing authentic, confident images. When you're prepared for the conditions, you can relax and enjoy your session, allowing your true self to shine through in every photograph.
