I ask everyone's pronouns and names (and actually use them)

Before we even start, I ask every person in your family what name and pronouns they use. Then I use those names and pronouns throughout the entire session. No assumptions, no "but what's your real name," no misgendering. If I fuck up, I correct myself or thank the person correcting me and move on. Your trans and non-binary family members shouldn't have to spend the session being invalidated, let alone at a very basic level.

Clothing choices are respected, full stop

If your trans family member wants to wear a binder, they wear a binder. If your non-binary kid wants to dress in a way that makes them comfortable, that's what they wear. If someone's dysphoric about certain body parts, we photograph them in ways that respect that. I'm not here to force anyone into gendered clothing expectations or poses that make them uncomfortable. Comfort creates better photos anyway.

Groupings reflect actual relationships

Traditional family photography assumes gendered parent roles - "mom and dad" groupings or posing. But your family might have two dads, or a non-binary parent, or parents who don't use traditional labels. During the session, we photograph your actual family structure using the language you actually use. "Parents and kids," "the whole family," "s/niblings together" - whatever reflects your loved ones.

The session itself focuses on you being you

During outdoor family portrait sessions in Seattle, I direct you through activities and genuine interactions, not performative gender roles. Trans and non-binary family members get photographed with the same respect and visibility as everyone else. Nobody's hidden, nobody's minimized, nobody's made to perform gender they don't identify with.
