Maternity Photos for Queer Families in Seattle

Maternity photography is traditionally designed for straight couples. And yet, families of all different structures can be pregnant and want maternity photos! While I customize every experience with each family, here is my general advice and thoughts for queer families.

Including all the parents-to-be

Traditional maternity photos focus on the pregnant person and maybe their partner. But queer families building families might have two moms (one pregnant), a polyamorous triad (one pregnant, two other parents), a single queer parent, or trans masculine folks who are pregnant. During maternity sessions in Seattle, we photograph everyone who's becoming a parent - not just the person carrying the baby. Your non-gestational parent deserves to be in these photos too. Your whole polycule deserves representation. These photos document everyone's journey into parenthood.

Addressing dysphoria for trans pregnancies

If you're trans masculine and pregnant, maternity photos might feel complicated. We'll talk beforehand about what you're comfortable with: showing your belly versus keeping it covered, how you want to be referred to, what feels affirming versus dysphoric. The goal is photos that celebrate your pregnancy in ways that respect who you are.

Plus size pregnant bodies are fucking beautiful

This isn’t necessarily queer-specific, but an honorable mention. If you're queer, plus size and pregnant, you might have internalized bullshit about how your body looks. Please know that you are worthy of being celebrated and SEEN. You are loved in this body, right now. You look good enough to be remembered.

Your pregnant body (whatever size it is) is creating life and deserves to be celebrated. During outdoor maternity sessions, I'll photograph your belly, your whole body, your actual shape without trying to minimize or hide anything. Plus size pregnancy is just as worthy of documentation as any other pregnancy.

What the session actually involves

I specialize in maternity photos outdoors in the gorgeous PNW, capturing you and your partner(s) in natural settings. Activities, movement, genuine connection, not awkward posed belly (touching unless that's your thing). If you're exhausted and swollen and uncomfortable, we work with that. Pregnancy isn't always glowing and magical, and your photos can show both.

After the session, we'll create customized artwork for your home: artwork celebrating your queer family's pregnancy journey exactly as it was. Daily reminders that your family, however it's configured, is beautiful. And you are so loved in this body!
