Capturing authentic moments: tips for relaxed LGBTQ+ family portraits

The best queer family portraits happen when everyone's actually relaxed, not when everyone's performing. Here's how to make your outdoor family photo session in Seattle feel natural instead of stressful. Ideally, this is something you plan and collaborate with your photographer. Here is my general advice:

Wear clothes you'd actually wear

Obviously I will guide you on what to wear if we work together. But please don't buy new outfits just for photos if that’s not exciting to you. Wear items that not only feel good sensory-wise, but feel like you. If your queer family lives in flannels and jeans, wear that. If your polyam household coordinates outfits naturally, great. If everyone has wildly different styles, that's okay too. Authenticity beats “perfection” every time.

Let your family structure show

Two moms? Three parents? Chosen family? Blended configurations? Cut out the noise that makes you question if your family "looks right" for photos. Your actual family structure IS right!! During the session, we'll photograph all the combinations that matter to you - each parent with kids, the whole polycule together, the chosen family bonds. Your family doesn't need to fit traditional groupings to be beautiful. We discuss this ahead of time so I don’t make assumptions.

Plus size bodies belong in every shot

If you're plus size, you might be tempted to hide in the back or minimize yourself in family photos. Please don't!! You deserve to be fully present and visible in your family portraits. I'll use angles and composition that make everyone look powerful without trying to make anyone smaller. Because your body deserves to be celebrated, not hidden. You look good enough to be remembered, exactly how you are today.

Embrace the Uncontrollable

The more we try to force perfection, often the stiffer your photos will look. Kids won't cooperate? Let them run around or eat a snack. Someone needs to take a sit down break during our session? Not a problem. Unexpected rain? I have clear umbrellas! During your session, I'll guide you through activities and movement rather than rigid poses. Walking, laughing, playing - that's when real connection shows up in photos.

The artwork part matters

After your session, we'll create customized artwork for your home: wall art and albums that show your family every damn day how loved you are. These aren't just photos; they're daily reminders that your queer, polyam, plus size, or otherwise "non-traditional" family is worth celebrating exactly as you are. That's what authentic family portraits actually do.
