Seattle Queer Family Portrait Pricing and Packages Explained

Family portrait photography in Seattle offers a beautiful way to celebrate your loved ones and capture authentic moments together. If you're considering booking a family portrait session in Seattle, one of your first questions is likely about the cost.

The most important piece of information to consider is the value of this investment.

Typical Price Ranges

Family portrait photography in Seattle typically ranges from $300 to thousands of dollars, depending on several factors:

  • Deliverables: Whether you are just getting digital images or investing in artwork, the price can depend on a few items. Most photographers provide digital images, the price increasing if you want more images. Typically, these are offered as set packages. I provide customized artwork for folks, so folks don't need to choose a package. Instead, we create artwork that is perfect for your home and exactly what you love.

  • Session Length: Most photographers offer packages ranging from mini sessions (15-30 minutes) to full experiences (1-2 hours). Mini sessions can be a fine option for folks who know what they want or are comfortable in front of a camera. However, I personally hate mini sessions; I talk about that more in another blog. I don't charge for time, but a lot of photographers do.

  • Experience Level: More established photographers with specialized family photography experience generally command higher rates. Look for photographers who understand how to work with queer families, trans and non-binary folks, polyamorous families, and families of all body sizes.

  • Location: Some photographers charge a premium for things like permits, parking or other costs. I personally cover all these necessary costs for my clients, but would be important to clarify ahead of time with whoever you select.

  • Timing: Peak summer months in Seattle could come with premium pricing due to high demand and optimal weather conditions. Additionally, photo sessions on evenings or weekends will generally be offered at a premium. For me, I do not charge more for the time of year, but have noticed that others may.

  • Value of Art: While you could buy a cheap canvas at Ikea, having customized fine art for your home is invaluable. While I love the experience of family portrait sessions, too often digital images get lost in our phones. That's why I love creating visual reminders so every day you can see your family's love, connection, and joy reflected back at you.

To be frank with you, the price you pay depends on what you are looking for and the impact you hope it has in your life. Some photographers charge a nominal fee (think in the $300-500 range), which is honestly hard to see. This means they are likely not making minimum wage for their work. For any photographer charging you less than $1,000, they are not charging you the price of their time, expertise, and value. That might work out for you and the photographer, however, I encourage you to consider this an investment into yourself, your family, and the arts.

Additional Costs to Consider

When budgeting for your family portrait session, keep these potential add-ons in mind:

  • Coordinating outfits or special clothing ($50-limitless)

  • Props or special items that hold meaning for your family

Why Family Portrait Photography in Seattle is Worth the Investment

Seattle's diverse landscapes, from lush forests and mountain views to serene beaches and urban parks, create unique settings for family portrait photography. The natural elements add an artistic dimension that can't be replicated in a studio, resulting in images that capture both your family's authentic connection and the breathtaking Pacific Northwest scenery.

When searching for the right photographer, look for someone who specializes in family photography and has experience working with families like yours. As a queer photographer, I especially welcome LGBTQ+ families, including queer, trans, non-binary folks, and polyamorous families. I also center body neutrality and create a comfortable, affirming environment for families of all sizes and backgrounds. Review their portfolio to ensure their style aligns with your vision, and don't hesitate to reach out.

Remember that family portrait photography is more than just photos; it's an experience designed to celebrate your family's unique love and connection, creating lasting memories. And with me, it's also creating artwork that reminds you of that love on the hard days.

The investment reflects not only the final artwork but also the photographer's expertise in creating a comfortable, authentic environment where everyone can be themselves. We create that together!

My current pricing includes a $285 fee to book a session and my artwork starts at $695. Interested to learn more? Let's chat!
