Monthly Fat Swim

The Bay area has a weekly fat swim that has been taking place for over 40 years. When I visited with a friend, I was completely inspired to host something ongoing here in the Seattle area with my fellow fatties. I am a water baby and basically every other fat person I’ve talked with can relate.

White femme stands on a large rock next to the ocean while the deep blue waves crash against their feet. This person is wearing black lingerie and their purple curls frame their stunning face looking out to the ocean.

After calling every public pool in King County, I came up with a list of options for folks and shared. Can you believe 90 people responded that they are interested to join? A dream. A little over 60 folks responded to provide feedback and the number one choice was clear: location and details shared with those who are on email list for safety reasons.

Black femme swims in a pool, with their hand covering their face from the camera. The sunshine is trickling in and shining on their body, making them look like a stained glass art piece.

If you are a fat adult, I hope you join! Here are some of the expectations:

  1. This is an unapologetically fat-positive; discussion of diets, food restriction, body shaming of yourself or others, and intentional weight loss will not be tolerated.

  2. No form of hate - systemic or individual - such as racism, anti-Blackness, sexism, anti-fatness, anti-queerness, ableism, whoreaphobia, and any other forms of hate will be tolerated. We agree to be responsible and accountable to the impact of our words and actions.

  3. This space is for folks of all genders. We agree to ask pronouns and respect all gender identities and expressions.

  4. Consent is required - we agree to ask before touching one another, sharing vulnerable or intense information, or talking about trauma in any way.

  5. This space is for swimming, splashing around, chatting or general pool vibing. There will not be any structured time or mandatory group activities. Everything is optional.

  6. We agree to rapid test for COVID the day of each swim and stay home if feeling any symptoms of being sick.

  7. We agree to keep this space alcohol and drug-free to honor those who are in recovery.

  8. You are in charge of your own body! We agree that asking for what we need and responding to each others’ requests are our own responsibilities.

I hope you join! More information can be shared via email.
